Haiti Relief at Indian Creek

My heart hurts over what is happening in Haiti. I lived through the ’64 earthquake in Anchorage, Alaska, so the pictures in the news have feeling attached from my own experience.

I’ve been praying, but I want to help in a tangible way and I’m guessing you do, too. Haiti has been devastated by the largest earthquake in its history—one of 7.0 magnitude. The capital city of Port-au-Prince is destroyed and the death toll is projected to be in the hundreds of thousands. The challenges of the relief effort will grow by the hour. The time is now to act! And the needs will continue for weeks, months, and years on different levels.

Here’s some ways we will assist at Indian Creek

Three Crosses

This morning three of us, Jon DeWitt, Rick Keaton and I met in the Prayer Room to pray as a part of our 21 Days of Fasting and Praying for the Truth. We had a super time praying together.  I love what God is doing in this effort to seek out the truth at all cost. By the way, if you haven’t seen the refocused Prayer Room you got to get there. The whole environment is prepared in such a way that it fosters prayer BIG TIME!

While we were praying I began thinking about the three crosses. We often set crosses in sets of three…

What Would You Say

Today Belinda and I got the call from Sandy, Amy Tyler’s mother, that we didn’t want to get. As of the time I’m writing, 5 p.m. on Saturday, January 9, they didn’t think she would live more than a few hours. The family asked us to come and support during this time.

What would you say?

It is a privilege to be present at a birth and it is a privilege to be present when someone leaves this life for heaven. We read…

Our First and Best

I want to see us give God our first and our best in 2010. I believe this is the year where we connect the fruitful mission of our past to an even more fruitful future. It is the year of our 25th Anniversary at Indian Creek and I can’t wait to see what great things God will do through us in the Next 25 yrs!

I’ve prayed about how to start this year with a Godward focus…to read the post click on the title.

Even Elizabeth

Last week I spoke at Indian Creek Community Church, and I used this same story this week in Morehead, KY, to illustrate that nothing is impossible with God.  Read Luke 1:26-37, the section of scripture where the angel reveals to Mary that she will bear the Messiah, there is a verse that can easily get lost in the momentous truth of the virgin birth.  I love the part where it says (v36), even Elizabeth…you may think that is about as obscure as it gets but hang in there with me.

Why I Blog

I blog to give voice to the things that roll around in my head. Daily there are ideas, questions, thoughts and learnings that cause me to go hmmm. Writing is a discipline that causes me to catch these musings and examine them. I’ve kept a journal for years and continue the practice today. Blogging takes the discovery process a step further and it invites you, the reader, into the process.

Follow Him

The Apostle Paul was bold and courageous to say, Follow me as I follow Christ (1 Cor. 11:1).  Can you imagine the scrutiny he would engage in today’s media? With Twitter, Facebook, blogs, Google, and CNN just guess what kind of reviews he would get with riots, shipwrecks, guys falling out of windows while he preached and verbally dressing down Peter in front of his homies.

Talks with My Dad

I’m dedicating this post to my dad, who is 74, and fighting to regain health and vitality. In fact he had surgery today and as I write I’m waiting to hear the results.

Lately we’ve had multiple talks about the purpose and meaning of life. One of the themes we’ve discussed is that this life is essentially preparation for the life to come. It is easy to get so caught up in this life that we act like it is all there is and the life to come is a reward for how we live this life. But I’m not so sure that is wise.

Humility

At the beginning of each year I ask God to give me one thing to focus on for the year to come. There are times the subject comes to mind quickly and other times it takes weeks to discern. Last year the answer came quickly much to my disappointment (I’ll explain).

The answer was clear and it came quickly, the subject for the year to come (2009) was humility. What would you think if God gave you that subject matter for the coming year? And don’t tell me you would be excited!
